When the Jewish Enlightenment or Haskalah movement swept across Europe in the late 18th century, it greatly advanced the lives of Europe’s Jews by catapulting them out of the ghetto and into the modern world through its leader, the educator and philosopher Moses Mendelssohn. But along with this huge success came a powerful backlash that paved the road to the Holocaust with a virulent revival of “the hate that would not die.” How did this happen, and why?

Dr. Burghardt is a journalist and author from Great Neck, NY. She worked as a freelance reporter for The New York Times for 20 years and is the author of three non-fiction books. Her articles and essays have appeared in newspapers throughout the U.S. and she has lectured to both national and international audiences. She holds a Ph.D. from LIU Post and is the daughter of Holocaust Survivors from Vienna.
