Women and Resistance During the Holocaust

Tuesday, May 3, 2016, at 7 p.m.

Holocaust Memorial & Tolerance Center
Welwyn Preserve, 100 Crescent Beach Road
Glen Cove, NY

Debórah Dwork is the Rose Professor of Holocaust History and Founding Director of the Strassler Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies at Clark University. She will discuss the myriad threats faced by women and girls during the Holocaust and how they responded to those dangers. Dr. Dwork will illustrate how Jewish women resisted during all stages of Nazisim, and the different forms of resistance employed across occupied Europe.

Faced with manhunts, deportations and horrifying rumors about “unknown destinations” to which Jews were shipped, underground groups throughout Europe sprang up, created by people who felt the need to act. In her talk, Dr. Dwork will describe these heroic endeavors, focusing on the role of women and the amazing initiatives they undertook.

Professor Dwork is an internationally renowned authority on the Holocaust. She is the author of several books including Children With a Star, which became the topic of a CBC documentary.

There is a suggested donation of $10 to attend. Space is limited and RSVPs are required. Please contact Lara Carignano at (516) 571-8040 or laracarignano@hmtcli.org.
