Deli Man Zoom Screening Revives Old World Jewish Traditions

Fans of the enduring Jewish delicatessen tradition, take note: The Holocaust Memorial and Tolerance Center of Nassau County will host a virtual screening of the documentary Deli Man followed by a post-screening Zoom discussion on Thursday, Dec. 17 at 6:30 PM, featuring Ronnie Dragoon (Ben’s Kosher Deli) and Ziggy Gruber (Kenny and Ziggy’s Deli) from the film.

Bridging the virtual with real life, viewers can nosh on Hanukkah meal boxes from any of Ben’s seven restaurants including locations in Queens, Long Island and South Florida. Home delivery and restaurant pick-up service is available through a link on the registration page, as is a free trial subscription to Amazon to screen the film independently.

“The delicatessen plays a key role in many Jewish traditions, going back to Eastern Europe,” said Andrea Bolender, chair of the HMTC. “Remembering and revitalizing these traditions, which have survived the Holocaust, is part of our mission. These traditions are part of our survival as a people.”

Produced and directed by Erik Greenberg Anjou, Deli Man is the third work in his Jewish culture trilogy, following cinematic celebrations of Jewish liturgical music (“A Cantor’s Tale”) and the klezmer tradition (“The Klezmatics – On Holy Ground.”) Deli Man, released in 2014, spotlights Ronnie Dragoon, who founded his Kosher restaurant chain on Long Island, and Ziggy Gruber, a former Five Towns Long Islander and Yiddish-speaking French chef. The gregarious Gruber is the owner-operator of Houston-based Kenny and Ziggy’s.

Registration is $36 for the post-screening discussion. Proceeds support HMTC’s Holocaust and Tolerance Education Programs. Register online at hmtcli.org/events/deli-man or call Deborah Lom, 516.571.8040 x107.
