How We Got Here: Diaspora in the Corners of the World

How did Jews end up in so many different places? In this installment of the How We Got Here webinar series, Gilad Avrahami and Trevor Stern will bring you on a tour of the Jewish communities that have thrived – often for many centuries – in places such as Henan (China), Maharashtra (India), Curaçao (Caribbean), Gondar (Ethiopia), and Bukhara (Uzbekistan). Often more isolated from the international Jewish community, these groups faced specific challenges and developed distinctive practices that enabled them to preserve their Jewishness. The accelerating dissolution of these communities raises important questions about the choice between remaining in a “diaspora” at home and joining in the “return” to somewhere far away.
