When the Nazis demand that one adult member of each family in Lale Sokolov’s hometown in Bratislava sign up for service to the Germans, he volunteers to be the one to go, hoping to keep his parents and siblings safe. Soon after his arrival at Auschwitz-Birkenau in April 1942, he was put to work tattooing the trembling arms of the new inmates. There is one young woman who touches his heart so deeply he vows to survive the war and find her, and with this resolve, he struggles for the endurance to preserve his love, his humanity, and his life.
Dr. Linda Burghardt, Scholar-in-Residence, will lead the discussion.
